Hero Material

I have written and heard about many things beings recovered and recycled into stylish wearable pieces, but fire hoses most definitely tops the most innovative.

Elvis & Kresse creates accessories by re-engineering seemingly useless wastes. The innovative and pioneering Fire-Hose range is made exclusively from genuine de-commissioned British fire brigade hoses which, after a distinguished career fighting fires and saving lives, were otherwise destined for landfill. Hoses are made from double wall nitrile rubber and are so tough that it is impossible to biodegrade.

And if that wasn't enough of a good deed, 50% of profits from the fire-hose line are donated to the UK Fire Fighters Charity.

The collection of bags and belts have already won a celebrity following. Cameron Diaz, wore a belt in the June 2009 issue of Vogue.

My personal favourite is the red messenger bag, please visit to Elvis & Kresse to check out their new 2010 collection

DC Bag Bill becomes Law

Residents in DC will now have to pay 5 cents for every carrier bag given to them when they checkout at all stores. One to two cents of the fee returns to the retailer and the remainder will go into an Anacostia River Cleanup and Protection Fund to help restore one of the most polluted rivers in the countryThe fund will also pay for reusable bags and an educational campaign for low-income, elderly, and other needy residents

What a great start to the decade, hopefully by the time new decade comes around there will be no sign of plastic bags anywhere. In fact the City CFO estimates that the new law will reduce demand for carrier bags by 90% in 5 years.

I look forward to a plastic bag free 2010!
